Hello! I am a recent grad from the University of Vermont, I plan on applying to vet school in the fall. The only thing I'm missing class-wise is the appropriate number of credits of biochemistry for some of the schools to which I'm applying.

I took three credits of the first half of a higher-level biochemistry class at UVM. I decided not to take the second half since it wasn't required to graduate, and I needed my schedule slightly less full to work on my thesis. Most schools I'm looking at require at least 4 credits, and specify that one half of a two-part class will not fulfill the req.

My questions are:

1. Will they accept a second-half class from a different school, or should I wait until spring and take it at UVM?

2. If I wait until spring, can I still apply in the fall if I state my intention to complete the class?

3. Do you think they would accept a further three credits if I were to take a one-semester class that is designed to cover 'everything'? Or do you think those two classes wouldn't add together?

I'd like your opinions before I email the schools. 😀

1. Yes, you can take it at any school
2. Depends on the school, but for most schools that should be fine. just check the websites of the schools you're interested in applying to.
3. I think you do need to take a 4 credit course. Though, if your university only offers 3 credit courses, chances are schools will take it. you'll want to contact them to be sure though... If you're going to have to take another course though, why not just take one that you're sure they'll take???

I applied to some schools that required 1 semester of the "broad, 1 semester biochem" OR both semesters of a series. I took just the first half of a series... and they didn't seem to care. I didn't even check with them beforehand as I didn't want to attract attention to it since there was no way in hell I was going to shell out moola for any more classes. The class I took was 5 units though, so that may have made a difference. And I did take like 8 upper level science courses beyond the required anyway, so maybe that's why they didn't care as much.

I think Minnerbelle pretty much said everything, but I had some issues with biochem, as well, so I just thought I'd throw my $.02 out there...

1. I took my first semester at my undergrad and the second at a local branch university, so I don't see how this would be a problem.

2. I did that exact thing: I applied last cycle for c/o 2014 and didn't finish my second semester of biochem until this past May. The only thing I can think of is to make sure there's enough time between when grades are posted and when the schools you're applying to require the transcripts be received (I think I had a month). But, like Minnerbelle mentioned, there are some schools that require you to finish your pre-reqs earlier than that.

3. TAMU requires 5 credits (labs didn't count), so I had to take a second course. You could probably contact your individual schools to ask if they'll take it, but if you're going to end up taking a second class of biochem anyway, I would take the second half of the course you already took...I'd think it would be more comprehensive for you, rather than going over stuff you've already learned. Just my thoughts...Good luck!
