When exactly do people start going on second looks? Do programs have specified dates or can you arrange to go on any day when they aren't conducting interviews? I'm asking because I'm wondering if I can overlap some late interviews with second looks at early interviews in the same area? This would be like mid January.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help!

some programs have specific days set aside for second looks. but if i remember, you usually can arrange a second look for yourself, but have to call the program to find out how to do it. you can time your interviews and second looks any way you want, just don't make it so you leave the interview early, or show up to your second look late, or else it'll look bad. second looks are usually towards the end of the interview season, but if the program lets you pick a day to do them, technically you can do it anytime after your interview. someone correct me if i'm wrong

You are right IMdocT:

Most programs (including our own) allow for second looks as interview season winds down. Remember the reason for second looks - it is for the applicant to see those programs that are top choices. These are almost always held on non-interview days, and involve a more in-depth look of the day-to-day (i.e. rounding with a ward team, going to more conferences, etc).

Once your are done with interview season, or it is coming to a close, you can contact the chief resident at the program regarding second looks. That being said, most programs will be willing to help you with a second look if you are in the area for another interview - but are usually restricted that they are on non-interview days.

One note: Very rarely will it ever change your ranking. It is more for applicants, not the program.

Best of LUck!
