I'm curious if anyone knows how people go about applying for a second residency. Do you go through ERAS? Or is it done outside the match? And what about LORs? Has anyone gone through this process who could talk about their experience a bit? Thanks!

I haven't gone through it but I did have a close friend go through it and he had to go through ERAS. He was applying while in internship though, and had a matched spot for his advanced years in residency, so he had to request a waiver and match again.

Not sure if you've already completed residency or not. Regardless, You'll likely have to go through the match. Alternatively, you can wait till after match next week and look for unmatched spots.

Are you completing one and going into another? Or bailing out halfway through one and jumping ship to another? This matters both for your LORs and how likely you are to get a spot. The first and proposed 2nd specialty choices also matter.

The simplest answer to your simplest question is that you can either do it through ERAS next season (the easy way) or you can cold call PDs in your specialty of choice and see if they'd be willing to offer you a position (the hard way). Your call.

Friend of mine just did this. He applied to anesthesia through ERAS during his 3rd year of his IM residency. He finished IM and passed his IM boards.

Do you know who he asked for LORs? Did he have letters from anesthesia attendings?

That's funny--I didn't even realize the match was next week! I'm thinking more down the road, in a couple years. I'm a resident now and don't plan to bail, but am not sure about the future.

With the increasing number of medical schools without an equivalent increase in residency spots, I'm guessing it will be even more difficult to do a second residency in the coming years?
