Hi everyone,

This is for those of you who took 2nd semester biochem. It seems like it's going to be a very difficult course. I'm already very anxious about it.

So I'm just wondering what you thought of it? Do you have any helpful study tips or other ideas for doing well in this course? Do you know of useful books or other supplements? Hoping for some responses.:xf:Any advice is appreciated.

We also used Lehningers, out of a class of 300+ only 10 people got an A. It wasn't that the content was too difficult, it was more so that the prof tested very specifically and marked very hard.

This is what I'm struggling with in biochem 1.

Biochem 2 is strictly metabolism and DNA at my school. Do not want.

Out of the 3 semesters I thought it was the easiest but then again I was really math oriented. It all depends on your professor... We used Lehninger's.

I'm referring to the second half. We have it in a 2 semester sequence. If you don't mind me asking, did you get an 'A?'

Shear luck and determination. This type of distribution is pretty common in courses like Physiology, Biochemistry and Genetics at my school. Mind you the majority of the people in these classes are all strong pre-med/dent/opt/pharm students as well. It is what it is.
 
I got an A+ in biochemistry 2 and it was a lot of memorizing. I had to remember the glycolysis, TCA cycle, plus some other cycles we had to learn. My tips are just straight up memorizing everything and practice, practice till you can draw out the cycles without looking at the textbook. I did this and I had over 100 papers of just cycles.
 
Pretty much what yellowperil said. Odd though, at our school, Gylcolysis, TCA and the likes are all in Biochem 1.

That's what we had for biochem 1. A lot of the things in biochem 1 such as the TCA cycle or glycolysis, we saw in general biology and chemistry in lesser depth.

I'm more worried about biochem 2 since it's newer territory. I feel like very little of it is going to be stuff we've seen before except for maybe transcription/translation. I'm going to go ahead and study for it just like I studied for the first one, but of course if anyone has something that worked really well for them, please share 👍

^^^ A great book for biochem. My professor from undergrad wrote it. I'm not sure what is required for undergrad biochem as my class was technically a graduate course but that book is used at some med schools so it has all the details you could ever need.


The hardest part for me was without a doubt metabolism. Knowing every single pathway/biosynthesis and it's regulation/integration was unreal. The kinetics part/anything DNA was covered pretty well in his course/book but it all pales in comparison to a comprehensive approach at metabolism.
