Second Semester is Kicking My Tail!?!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just can't concentrate anymore. I have tried turning off my internet, sitting in a cubicle, and playing music. I just want to go back home and have more family time.

I don't know if class is harder or it's just me 🙁

I just feel like I am so far behind already after 1 week (this semester) that it would have taken me 3 weeks (last semester) to be in this position!

And to think that everyone was saying 2nd semester of first year was easier than the first. Ha

More ranting is encouraged, by the way.

You have more flexibility in your time but more lectures to go through. No anatomy means you have to equally spread your time on everything on a higher volume of material.

i don't know about ur school, but we just got to the head and neck and neuro now. this is supposed to be toughest part. and all i want to do is stay home to avoid the snow and curl up with a good book. or maybe rerurns of House.

I'm going to ruin the parade by saying that right now, 2nd semester is glorious compared to first semester as an M1. Last semester, we had to cram in anatomy, embryology, biochem, a third of physiology, genetics, half of histology, and BS clinical correlation classes. Class from 8-6PM was more the common than not. A good day back that semester was only 5 hours of lecture. Right now, I only have physiology and a little bit of histo. The info is more interesting and it's so laid back...we usually have 2-3 hours of class a day, and half of the time classes don't start till 10AM. The latest I've gotten out was 3PM (except for a pig lab we're doing).

It gets better...stick with it.

Don't worry, the first two years were the hardest for me. I'll be graduating in a couple of months...it goes by fast (in retrospect).😎

Just think though, you've got 1 semester down that you don't have to repeat (I hope), and you're closer to clinical stuff. You're also closer to the new M1s coming, and seeing them suffer with the stress of M1 year.

There is ABSOLUTELY no way I'd ever go back and repeat the 1st 2 years for any reason. Actually, I wouldn't repeat a whole bunch of rotations of this year either, but that's because I know what I want to do, and I really don't want to do any more pelvic exams ever again or take a complete psych history.

how does that make you feel?

yeah, my mojo was gone for the first 2 weeks. Its slowly coming back.

I'm a second year but feel the same way. You're just gonna be a little off your game after you've had a few weeks off. At our school, the second semester of MS1 was much more interesting than the first semester, so that's a plus.

Well, it's coming on week 4 here for me, and I've resigned myself to basically throwing away January. After all, did I really need this month? I'll learn it...later..haha

Don't worry about it, I'm sure everything will start to pickup in the next few weeks.

Anyone here heading down to Monterey in the next few days? If you are, u know what for!

lets be honest...

1st year sucks
2nd year sucks way more than first...you may not think its possible, but it is. i dont even remember too much of where i ilved because i spent so much time in a damn cubicle
3rd year - the hours suck. you cant say **** it today, ill catch up tomorrow. each day is hell.
4th year - supposedly awesome.
residency - depending what you do, the vast majority suck, because on top of making dogsh_t for money, u work insane hrs and get yelled at.

so the secret? accept it, and work past it. is there a light at the end of the tunnel? it's a long long tunnel. but the light's there. until then, just keep plugging away.

I actually think 2nd year sucks way less than 1st year, so it's not universal that it gets worse. Sure, there's more material, but I like it more, and I'm more established in my studying routine.

Agree that it's more interesting, but it's definitely a LOT more material. Also, we've already had a half dozen people informed by the dean's office that they'll have to be repeating second year - only had 1 casualty first year. That definitely sucks.

Based on our exam averages, it seems like we're doing about the same 2nd year as 1st year.

I just couldn't even imagine. I feel so sorry for those people. I"m sure everyone was working hard, and to not see the benefits of it must be really tough.

Anyway, I think 1st year is Ok, but I get much more excited when I see that what I"m learning is clinically applicable. I hear 2nd year makes you feel that way more, so I'm hoping that I"ll enjoy it more.

It's awful & we all feel terrible for them. Even if you're doing ok, it's kind of demoralizing to see classmates mysteriously disappearing. Doesn't help that our dean's office isn't particularly supportive of those who get into academic trouble.

FWIW, those I've spoken to in this situation say their biggest problem was trying to learn the material at the last minute for exams (i.e., 3 or 4 days prior). This isn't a great plan for first year, but some people can (and did) pull it off, in some cases doing quite well. Doesn't seem to work for most folks in 2nd year. I've told my first year friends to get their disiciplined study routine in place whether they currently need it or not - makes the transition to MS2 less painful.

On the bright side, MS2 coursework is MUCH more interesting for the most part.

I just hate micro

Eh, I think it sucks more. 😛

And sorry, I thought second semester of M1 was a lot better than first, even though I did study more. However, second semester of M2 is proving to be a lot worse than first. 😡

Please forgive my complaining, by the way. Just a little venting sometimes feels good. 🙂

And by the way, I feel sort of like a kid in line at the amusement park, just waiting with delightment to see the prophecies of second year come true! Read: Can it possibly be THAT bad?

Yes, I know the answer is undoubtedly "Yes." Oh, well, I better pass these exams before I worry about that stuff.

Thanks guys 👍

Also, did anyone see this article about medical students, ehem, winning the "Wilt Chamberlin" contest amongst other students? Thoughts? I know I have mine, haha.

Although 8 sure is a lot less than 1000 or whatever he claimed.

How many other people feel like this? 😕😕😕:scared:

Dunno. Are you a first year? At my school, second semester first year is historically the most laid-back (other than late 4th year).

Good luck either way.

Likewise here (until neurobio starts).

talking about averages, do any of your schools have just ridiculous averages? ie: 85 and above on everything? I barely cut average and I feel like I worked my *** off. I just didnt expect the volume of smart people in med school, or the volume of peopel way smarter than me. its humbling.

a few of our exam averages were 90. it gets frustrating to be "average" after busting major as$ for an exam.

Yep, that sounds about right. Our last path exam had the lowest average of the year - a 76 on the heme/onc block. It's usually between 84-88.
