The Background: I'm currently a sophomore at university of illinois urbana/champaign and plan to start the premed journey during my second semester. Since I'm majoring in both Psychology and History, and because I just made the final decision to go premed, I haven't gotten down to the med school required classes...

The Situation: As of now, I have only taken one bio class (integrative biology, not molecular/cellular) and for math, just Stats 100 and 235. I want to complete all of the pre med required classes at the normal time (end of junior year?) so I can take the mcat at the normal time (summer before senior year?). I just want to know what my class schedule should look like for the rest of my college career with the above info in mind and with the assurance that I will graduate on the 4 - year track.

-I was thinking for second semester that I would take a bio course and a chemistry course, and then doing the same over the summer, then for first semester senior year I would do oganic chemistry and physics both semesters. -- What do you think? I have already taken stats 100 and 235 so should I do calc too?

Any help is greatly appreciated

The MCAT only requires first-year knowledge of bio/phys/chem/ochem. None of these courses require a knowledge of another. Statistics and Calculus are also independent: take Calculus if you think the schools you want to apply to will require it. Anything you don't learn, the MCAT books will teach.

Don't be so hasty in your plan... remember you need the EC's too.

If you read these forums you will notice there is no normal time when applying to medical school. It is not just about the classes. You need clinical experience, research, some shadowing, and the list goes on. You are only sophomore now so take your time and plan out everything. If it all works out within the next couple of years then that is great! Just take your time and don't rush it because if you let one part of your app fall behind it just makes things harder.

That schedule sounds doable to me. I took Ochem1 + Physics 1 + Bio 2 my first semester of sophomore year, so that's not impossible. However, you still need to work on your EC since it's another important factor in your app.

I completely agree. There is absolutely nothing wrong with applying later if it means your app will be better.

hey I'm at UIUC too and made the decision to pursue medicine later than usual as well. I majored in integrative bio but took the majority of MCB upper levels. let me know if you want to meet up and i'll outline what you need to do [email protected]
