Hi everyone, I just matched into a categorical residency program in a specialty area. The first year is mostly a medicine year. I have been having second thoughts about my specialty of choice. Is there any possibility I could try to stay in medicine after my first year? Is it possible to obtain a PGY-2 medicine position outside of the match (same institution vs. outside)? How difficult is this and how does one go about this?

For the sake of anonymity, I have not disclosed my specialty or residency location. Please post any advice you may have. Thank you.

it is...but now is probably too early to think about this...see how your intern year goes...if you are doing well as an intern, you can talk to the IM PD about staying on...though you will have to see if you can get a waiver to get out of the advanced spot...

You are guaranteed a waiver if you decide to change fields, and submit the request by Jan 15th. So start your IM year and see how things go.

Happens all the time....neuro?
