I was dumb and rashly sent in a letter of intent to a school (let's call it Awesome COM) before acceptances/financial aid packages were released, and I'm so lucky to have been accepted, but I got no financial aid. I've been waitlisted at a more highly ranked school that I'll call Elite COM (that would cost me the same amount to attend) that I now realize is a better option for me, for a variety of reasons. But I've already stated in my LOI that I would matriculate at Awesome COM if accepted... I would hate to come off as dishonest, but if I did end up getting off the wait list at Elite COM and decided to attend, would I be shooting myself in the foot for any chance at a future residency at Awesome? / future residencies in general?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks for reading!

I know a guy who could help you out: Uncle Sam. He will cover your awesome tuition! Ever thought about serving your country? Would you like to know more?

I can't imagine that Awesome residency would review your medical school application but I could be wrong. Even if we assume that they do, no other residency will have this information so it won't matter for anyone else.

This I just another example of why most schools don't give any weight to LOI's (regardless of your reasoning).

I'm curious to know as to how the needy schools that love LOIs would react to OP's situation if they were the "Awesome COM" as described
I haven't the foggiest clue, but they must know that they are worthless.
Maybe they believe in some psychological advantage to making folks write them a love letter...

Quit fussing. They knew you were lying.
