I am planning on applying to 18 medical schools. How much time and energy is devoted to secondaries? Should one be careful in choosing the appropriate course load in the Fall semester of his/her senior year?

If you could share some stories about what you did, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

I'm interested as well. And how about later on in the semester when we start to fly around for interviews?

I am planning on taking 2 lab classes in this summer and I am going to apply >20 schools. Hopefully I will still have some time to write my secondaries.

If you apply early you will get most of your secondaries quickly. They do take some time to complete. I wouldn't worry about the fall because they should all be in before then, but you might be busy in the summer. It is not such a big deal. If you want, you can get started based on last years prompts, they will probably be similar. It's hard to plan for interviews, you don't know when or how many you will get. I was already out of school by then.

Follow through and take the secondaries seriously. Put some thought and good writing into them. If you apply early early, you might be able to get through most of them before school even starts. That would be ideal.. more time to focus on the essays.

Your turnaround time on secondaries should really be no more than 3 days with just a few exceptions. The questions are easy, straightforward, and you see the same questions over and over again.

you can be done before school starts in September. As far as interviewing, most prof should be understanding. you won't be the only one applying.
