Secondary essay explaining low GPA? (SMP application)

I'm finishing up applications for SMP's. Some of the application have options to submit additional writing samples. In my personal statement, I mentioned how some personal challenges I faced throughout college brought forth my decision to become a doctor. Although, I did not go into detail about how those personal challenges also affected my academic performance.

Should I take the opportunity to submit an addendum explaining this? I'm pretty sure they will be able to put two and two together based on my personal statement and my resume. But, I just want it to be clear. What do you think?

I wouldn't necessarily focus on something negative for your writing sample. But I'm not sure what exactly these programs want.
