If they say that you can write up to a certain word count or character count, does it mean that they really expect something that long? For example, 300 words is a maximum for UVA. Are they expecting that much? or can 200 words would do?

I don't want to bloat it up just to fit it in. If my answer adequately answers the question, that's all that matters right?

Lastly, for questions that ask 'if you had academic difficulties', can you mention things about difficulties you had studying, preparing, or even the night before the MCAT? (lack of sleep, noisy hotel, location, etc.).

If you answered the question your fine. Don't ramble.

I would leave that section blank unless you really had some difficulties the committee needs to know about. Deaths in the family...etc... I don't think mentioning you had a bad night of sleep before the MCAT counts.

No. Thats more for like you got kidnapped on your way to class and couldn't take the final exam or stuff like that.

Is that section optional? how do you know which essays are optional and not optional?
