secondary optional essays

Hi,

For any optional essay on the secondary applications that ask you to describe any challenges you faced....should I bring up the fact that I took a semester off due to personal family reasons (i.e, drug addiction issues with a family member) but I still volunteered at hospital and a nursing home at this time....not sure if I should answer this section or leave these blank

Any help would be appreciated. thank you!
