The question begins by saying that they want to create physicians who help to improve society in all ways. It then asks where the applicant sees their career going.

I'm not sure where to go with this.

I want to be a surgeon in an academic medical context because I like the idea of my work having measurable outcomes and I want to continue to learn throughout my life, but the first reason has holes and the second can be argued for the medical profession as a whole, not just surgery.

Would you guys happen to have any advice or sources that would help with this question?

Thanks! I appreciate it!

Do you know what surgeons who work in an academic medical context do? If you have shadowed one, you should have an idea. I think your answer should be more specific as to what such a physician does. For instance, if someone wants to practice as a general practitioner in an underserved area, they should describe what kind of responsibilities or goals they have in that environment. E.g. serving low income patients, speaking Spanish, advocating for primary care

Okay.
1) You want to do surgery
2) You want to do research
That's as far as you got, and you're stuck.

Here are some things to consider:
1) What have you done in the past (ECs or life experiences) that has lead you to want to pursue academic surgery?
2) Have you done past research that may prove useful for academic surgery?
3) What is your specific research interest in the field of academic surgery??
3) Will your goals in academic surgery influence health care policy, ethical issues, and education?
