while making an interview appointment at a DC area school, i was bitched out by the secretary. there were a ton of people talking in the background on her end, and it was difficult to hear anything she was saying. plus, she had a thick accent so that didn't help. i kept asking her to repeat herself, and i had to speak up so she could hear me, and she told me that "you have no manners and you have no patience"...twice! before she started telling me that, i wasn't feeling angry or annoyed in any way! i think she must have misunderstood my tone of voice or something, but i'm so pissed! now i don't know if i should even bother going because she's probably going to leave a note by my name saying, "bitch"

don't let some one else's bad attitude gauge your success!! don't even worry about it and if it makes you feel better, try to call the school and patch things with her. don't worry about it!!!

Chances are everyone who works there has experienced her wrath in the past and probably takes any snide remarks she passes on with a grain of salt. Fact of the matter is...you are going to run into people like this as a physician and some times you just have to suck it up and take it because they can really make your life hell later on if you don't.

edit: Trick of the trade. I bring breakfast in for the secrataries every once in a while just to grease the wheels around my office. And you know what? It works. When I'm trying to get something out to a courier on time, they will stay late and stuff binders etc. I hear this can be very useful techinque when working with hospital staff.

It definitely sucks doesn't it? I got bitched out by this secretary the other day, she kept interrupting me so much I could hardly explain what I was calling for. What really peeves me about the whole thing, is that their job is to answer the phones and interact with us.

But anyhow, I also agree with everyone else and this is just a (minor) bump in the road. I doubt she has any leverage with the admissions committee.

i think i spoke to her when i called to schedule and i thought she was very nice... maybe she was having a bad day when you talked to her. 🙄

I wouldn't necessarily agree with this. Not that she has a vote on the adcom, but people who are rude to secretaries will probably be rude to nurses, and someone who is genuinely rude to admission staffer could find that the adcom hears about it.

BUT, as someone else mentioned, if she was unreasonably rude to you, she probably does it to other people, so even if she were to complain, no one will care.

I'm not trying to freak you out, as I really don't think you have anything to worry about, but I don't want other people to get the impression that you can dismiss the lowly secretaries and nothing will happen.
