Based off the khan academy video, it seems to me that shadowing is when a subject is presented with simultaneous information in either ear, and they must use their selective attention ability to attend to one ear.
How is that the case in this experiment? In the passage, it says that different information was played in both ears, but "Digits were never presented simultaneously"
Given that shadowing tasks are used to study selective attention, it just makes more sense that any experiment studying it would involve simultaneously playing different information into either ear, which was not the case in this experiment.
What am I missing?
Sure, it says in the intro paragraph that "Researchers used a task in which participants were required to focus attention on one of two different messages, presented simultaneously..."
But that is referring to the second phase of the experiment
The question asks about phase 1, in which sounds were not produced simultaneously, therefore it is not shadowing.
In support of this, I found this wiki page that explains that shadowing is used in dichotic listening tests, Speech shadowing - Wikipedia
Dichotic listening test - Wikipedia
Specifically, the participant is presented with both stimuli simultaneously, which was not the case in part 1 of this experiment, so I think this might be an error.
So basically, is shadowing supposed to involve simultaneous presentation of information or not?
