A good friend is contemplating undergoing lasik, their primary concern now is the is the discomfort from the procedure itself. They've been assured with the drops they won't feel anything, but it's more of a psyc matter. They want general anesthesia or at least deep sedation for the procedure.

I've already told them this is something to discuss with their surgeon, would certainly appreciate your input, whether you've encountered these requests before?

This is not the place for a professional medical opinion and any comments I have do not constitute a medical opinion or any form of professional advice or relationship.

That said, it doesn't sound very practical as deep sedation requires monitoring which is not usually part of a typical LASIK OR arrangement. GA of course means all that plus LMA at a minimum.

It doesn't sound as if this patient is a good candidate for the procedure on psychological grounds, but the first and final word ought to be from the patient's surgeon.

If your friend has this very normal and valid complaint and the surgeon did not answer it then they should seek their LASIK treatment somewhere else.

Also, if the patient goes under deep sedation then it will be very difficult for the surgeon to keep the eyes fixated on a central target.😴
