Hi all,

I was hoping to get some advice on what to do in my endeavor to go to medical school.

I've always considered med school at the back of my mind, but never fully thought to actually pursue it until now. I graduated in 2013 from a LAC with a degree in biology (neuroscience emphasis) and a 3.23 cgpa. I did not have a good first & second year, but had a upward trend throughout the rest of my time in college. That said, I was not good at chemistry (C+ in both gen chem 1&2) and so ochem 1 was pretty difficult for me--I got a D. I retook it along with ochem 2 at a community college the summer after my sophomore year (got As), which I am now realizing was a bad decision since adcom look down on community college coursework. I also took physics 1 at my college but since I did poorly (B-), I didn't bother to take physics 2. Basically I was not the most serious about my grades while in college.

Now that I have decided I want to go to med school, I am wondering if I should retake ochem 1&2 and physics 1&2 at my state university or if I should pursue a post-bac instead? I have not thoroughly researched post-bac programs but most of the well-respected programs seem to be only for those who have little to none of the prereqs fulfilled, therefore eliminating me since I have completed the majority of them. I have also considered the possibility of pursuing an SMP but I have not taken the mcat. And my gpa is a limiting factor in all of these scenarios.

Additionally, unless I teach myself physics 2 and study like mad for the next 3 months, I will not be able to take the mcat before the new format takes effect, so I'll also have to take biochem.

I am also currently taking microbiology and anatomy/phys at a community college right now because at the time that I was registering for them, I was thinking of pursuing a different profession.

Any advice on where I should go from here? Any insights would be appreciated.

I would recommend the post-bac program that has emphasis on getting the pre-reqs done. Many of these are for career changers, but don't worry about that.

If you can re-do your Physics there, then I think you'll be OK. Yes, Adcoms do look down upon CC work for the heavy-duty weeding courses, but I don't see a need to retake Orgo.

Ace the post-bac, and ace the MCAT and then aim for those schools that value reinvention.
