Hi SDN! This is my first post so please forgive me if there are formatting errors. I'll try to keep this short. I am interested in medical school(MD). I want to become an EMT/Scribe during my undergraduate studies so that I can gain experience in the medical field as well as make some money. The money part is not as important to me than the experience is. So my question is how viable is it to become and EMT/Scribe at UCSD? I understand that with EMT I have to take a course and pass the NREMT which will take some time. Does UCSD offer courses for this? What about the local hospitals? Does the medical school offer and EMT course? Where could I go if I wanted to take an EMT course. As for scribing, I talked to an upcoming senior at UCSD who is also interested in the medical field, and he told me that the nearest scribing place is 40-50 minutes away by car, that doesn't sound plausible for me given that I won't have a car for at least a year.

Anyways, I'm 95% sure that I will be committing to UCSD, it was one of my top choices for my undergraduate studies. If you have any advice for me as to how I should proceed with my freshman year, please do so. Any advice would be appreciated. Good luck with your studies and thank you so much!

Hey! I' currently a second year at UCSD. I looked in to EMT classes before, unfortunately, UCSD does not offer EMT classes. Two community colleges in the area offer EMT classes but they are both about 20-30 minutes away by car, so summer would be the only time to take the classes. As for scribing, the UCSD health system has a scribing program that recruits students, so you can do that locally without much of an issue, although they require second or third years. Good luck!! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey, I graduated from UCSD several years ago. EMT is ok I guess, but I highly recommend hospice volunteering and applying for teaching assistantships, which are totally unique to UCSD students. Thumbs up for scribing nearby. Go Tritons!

EMT: no UCSD classes. Gotta take them at CCs

One Scribe opportunity:
The UCSD scribe program is currently recruiting rising sophomore and junior pre-health professional students to the UC San Diego Scribe program.

"We are interested in students who will be available to start working this summer and continue into the academic year. Ideally, we would like to bring on board motivated students who are willing to commit a couple of years to the program.

Here is a brief description of the two orientation sessions that we will have on April 30 in room 141 of the MET Building (same session at two different times to accommodate student schedules). Also included is the formal job description that will be posted on Port-Triton shortly. We are specifically looking for pre-health students (sophomores and juniors during academic year 2015-2016) in the Health and Medical Professions Preparation Program. http://aepapps.ucsd.edu/hmp3/files/Scribejobposting2015.docx. I was just accepted to UCSD for fall transfer and am also looking for something to do this summer. The local CCs don't have any classes I need and I can't afford UC classes until financial aid kicks in. So... this was super helpful and thank you. I was also thinking about EMT and found classes at Miramesa Community College but I am concerned that after completing EMT classes, part time EMT jobs might be pretty hard to come by then I will have essentially wasted a summer that have been more productive. Has anyone scored an EMT job just out of EMT classes? Is that a valid concern? Sorry to hi-jack your thread Doctro Dre. I thought this was slightly relevant to the conversation.

Hey guys, thanks for all of your helpful replies. Since the beginning of the post, I have been accepted to UCB off of the waitlist. I'm choosing to attend UCB, hopefully the people there can be as helpful and nice as you guys. If anyone has any advice for me - I would greatly appreciate it.

Good luck with your medical careers! Go do big things
