I guess I never thought about it, but I just found out that Kessler is owned by a publicly traded company - http://www.selectmedical.com/inpatient-medical-rehab/

for some reason, I was always under the impression that it was a hospital run by UMDNJ. is this the exception, or are many of the other stand alone rehab hospitals (Spaulding, RIC, etc) owned by private companies? is working for a a large company like this analogous to working for Kaiser?

thanks

A majority of rehabilitation hospitals in the US are owned by for profit companies. Select Medical is the old ***********. They bought Select Specialty (a LTAC company) about 3-4 yrs ago and then split up the company by region. They bought Kessler's network of hospitals and clinics around that time.

Each company is different when it comes to micromanaging. But the growth of the "for profit" rehab hospital is one of the things that is souring the field of inpatient rehab. If you are the medical director, be prepared for a lot of meetings with finance people.

I do not know why the forum blocked the name of the company mentioned above. Let's just say it is Health South
