I was wondering if anyone here had experience with this collection of articles. I know someone had recommended it once in the past in a response to "what journals should I be reading" thread.

I'm considering using it, but I don't know if it's worth the money. Also, I was wondering how feasible it would be to split a subscription between 2-3 residents.

For those who have experienced SRGS, please let me know what you think.

Thanks,

i actually liked them. all the relevant current articles in one book that comes once a month or so.

then my program got cheap and stopped subscribing for the residents. (probably because only a few of us picked them up, the res tjust accumulated in the mailroom- LOTS of books!!)

i think it is expensive though for resident salary.

what i do now is just subscribe to the table of contents emails from like 10 journals and browse the articles there

My program provided them, and I think they are very well written. However, they are written with a great deal of detail on single topic. This is their main advantage and disadvantage. For example, I set out to read the copy on melanoma and it got so bogged down into the minutia of what sub category of what people is a greater risk for melanoma for which year and in which part of the world that I couldn't bare to finish it. What time you have for reading in residency is probably better spent on broader subjects and then more focused areas as the need arises.

how timely, i just pulled a stack of them out of my trunk, one of the graduating chiefs gave me hers when she left last year. anyway, they are from 2005, i'm not quite sure the utility of reading them at this point.

however, i was impressed with the content.

i'd like to know more about them and exactly how to use them

My program subscribed to this series and kept it in our Surgical Resident Library. The series is updated in a revolving pattern and thus, every topic is not updated every year but they try to cover everything over a two-year period. Many residency programs use this series as the basis of their educational programs (mine did not).

I found these pretty good for letting me know who the "movers and shaker" were in a particular topic. I found these great for reading "something" when I was away from my regular reading sources (those late nights while I am waiting to do a case). The articles are very dense and very complete as well as well researched. For me, they were not a quick study but were good references and starting points for many presentations and papers.

I don't know if I would subscribe to this series (expensive) over other resources but I would lobby my program to provide these in a secure place (medical library) for the residents.
