Sending a CV to POI's

I know it varies when emailing POI's as far as helpfulness and such. However, I asked one prof if he was taking students, he said yes and asked for my CV. I sent it to him and he seemed impressed and we talked about research, it went well, and now I am definitely going to apply there.

I know where ever I apply they will see my CV eventually but was my experience I just mentioned the exception rather than the norm? It'd be nice to know ahead of time if a professor actually wants me to be in his/her program or not.

Some profs seem to ask for CVs of interested students as a rule, and others never do. The fact that your talk with him about research went well is a good sign, but I wouldn't count on anything at this point. I would interpret this as a 'there's nothing in (or missing from!) your CV that would rule you out as a potential student at this stage'.

However, there are a lot of other variables, and whether or not you get an interview is going to depend on the rest of the applicant pool. Apply, but don't count your chickens quite yet. 🙂

I'm not counting my chickens, I promise. 🙂 I just wasn't sure how likely sending a CV ahead of time can produce any positive results for admission.
