Hello fellow, wonderful, non-competitive (lol) SDN'ers,

I am in a little dilemma. You see, I wanted to send out my secondaries as early as I could, so I sent them out around late July, with the last one being sent around mid-August.
In these secondaries, many ask what are your current/planned activities for this upcoming year. At the time of writing them, I was doing volunteer clinical research at Hospital X (would prefer not to write the name), which definitely has a good reputation, and is associated with 1 of the medical schools to which I am applying.

However, the position was voluntary - thus, no pay whatsoever, despite the research being solid. Thus, I told all the schools to which I applied that part of my activities this year entailed research at Hospital X.

THEN, Around 2 weeks ago, I interviewed and then luckily got offered a clinical research position at Hospital Y, which has a much better reputation (is a very well-known and respected institution; not trying to sound haughty at all, this is just the case). I did not think I would get this job. The more important reason I took this job is that it is PAID (thank goodness, this application process has destroyed my wallet).

Finally, my question: Should I update schools to let them know I got the new job? I feel that they'd be going "Well, didn't you just say you were doing research at Hospital X? Why is he bothering us with this?".

What do you guys think? Would you send updates? What sort of thing would you write? Would you explain the whole situation?

Sincerely,

Nyc1990

It would not be inappropriate to send an update letter saying that while you were doing research at X, you were accepted/hired at Y and accepted the paid position.

It probably won't even matter that much though either way, unless the new position is a well known, highly competitive one.

Thanks, folks. Advice is much appreciated. Any other opinions would be welcome as well. I will probably send an update now, as opposed to waiting for after October.
