Hey all,

So my school is doing a committee packet but my close family friend (basically second father) wants to write me a letter for a specific school in which he completed all of his medical training.

How would I go about sending this letter? Can I send a letter through the AMCAS system for a specific school even though I have a committee letter as well? Or should I just mail it directly to the school

So if I recall, when you add schools via AMCAS, for each school you add, you must check which LORs you wish to send schools. I remember this being tedious but inguess it works to your advantage here.

You add the letter through AMCAS and submit it to AMCAS and only pick that one school as a recipient for that letter. Assign your committee letter to all schools and leave that letter out.

So what can this guy say about your academic or research experience? This letter may be thrown in the trash - alum don't have any say in the process unless they are on the admin committee interviewer list. Think twice about this , it is like your dad saying how wonderful you are. Nobody cares about a LOR from non academic/work folks, and may backfire on you.

Nothing tells us a positive LOR can become a negative thing. Most probably, it's just neutral and doesn't add anything.

Adcoms on this site have told us that luke-warm letters of rec can be bad. I would assume that would include letters from family friends. Seems like it would come off as application padding.

Ah, I've only ever read the neutral perspective. Sampling bias

The letter writer has very strong ties to the school and it's important for him to do this so I'm not going to say no haha. I don't think it will hurt me in any way but probably won't help either. I just know it means a lot to him to write it so it's there.

Thanks everyone for the help
