Hello all,

So I am currently in this application cycle for MD programs, but I have not received any news or II's at this point except for 2 pre-interview rejections and 1 hold. I have a feeling that it may be due to my 3 sub-30 scores. I retook the MCAT for the 4th time this past 12/6/14 after having prepared extensively (and hoping it's 31+ at the moment) in case this cycle doesn't pan out. Of course, I want to keep some hope alive for this cycle. My questions are:

1. A lot of schools state that they would not receive January scores, but would they still count this score when reviewing applications at this point in time? I know that this MCAT date had been artificially created at the time.

2. After receiving the score, would it be necessary to just send an update to the schools about the new scores in writing? (I am planning to send a few updates to the application, so I may as well just add the fact that I have a new score coming in the mix.)

I am sorry to inform you that your newest score will be a little bit too late for this cycle. Unless your new MCAT score is out of this world (36+), the fact that you took it the 4th time (I assume that the other three times is below a 30) already decreased the value of your MCAT score. Some schools take the average of all of your MCATs, some schools only look at the most recent one. But either way, a score in Jan is way too late. Did you apply to any DO schools? A sub-30 MCAT is still competitive for many DO schools.
Anyways, just be patient and see how the cycle ends. If it doesn't work out, start boosting up your ECs and apply as early as possible with your next cycle. Try to include some DO schools as well. Buy the MSAR so you can pick appropriate schools and you can also create a thread in WAMC section to get more help with the school list. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. No, unfortunately I didn't apply to any DO schools. My focus was mainly on MD schools because of the greater flexibility of specialty matches when residency comes. The only major problem with the other scores may be the VR scores (6-7s). If it doesn't work out, I will apply to both MD and DO programs next cycle early.

I retook the MCAT with the expectation that I may have to apply next cycle again, but I am hoping some miracle happens with IIs these next 2 months. I have been told that no news is better than bad news, but at this point, do most med schools place rejections in queues to be sent out?
