Hey friends,

I have already applied to dental school, but I'm torn between two classes to take my final semester. Which course would be better preparation for dental school?

Immunochemistry or microbiology?

If you could go back before dental school, if you had to choose one, which of these would you have taken?

Unequivocally, you should take Spanish. Don't waste your time with those classes. Knowing Spanish will open up an entire new patient base for you and give the ability to see more patients in dental school, more patients after dental school and make more money in the long run. That's my honest suggestion as a 4th year student right now. About half of my patients speak Spanish only, and it's the only reason that I have so much of my requirements completed at this time. Microbiology would be the better of those two above, but seriously, Spanish (preferably conversational) would be 10 times better.

In my humble opinion (I'm a lowly D1) I would take which ever class is the easiest. Dental school is very time consuming, so I would enjoy the last semester of college as much as you can. Your best memories of undergrad won't be prepping for dental school, they will be partying with friends. Use ratemyprofessor or talk to someone who's taken them to find out which is easiest. If they would require the same amount of time commitment, I would take microbiology. Spanish is definitely a plus.

Maybe my opinion is biased because I am in Texas, but Spanish is clearly the second most spoken language in the US. If you can't or won't take Spanish, then take microbiology.

I'll never say knowing a second (or third, 4th, etc) language isn't beneficial - but in terms of it being a necessity as a dentist, I think it largely depends on where you want to practice. Living in Texas, it looks like it would be extremely practical; living in Maine, not so much.
