What is the differing role of R2 vs. R3? I thought that R2 had direct overisght responsibility on various services where there might be working teams to round on patients, but what occurs if R3 are also there? Then is the R2 in a similar understudy role again like an intern or does the R3 have a different job?

R2's at my hospital supervise R1's. R3's also supervise R1's, but R3's aren't on inpatient rotations/call as frequently as R2's.

If R2 and R3 are on rotation at same time how does it work? Do they just split the duties?

That never happens at my hospital. The R1 is either supervised by an R2 or an R3.
