Hello,

As part of my school's curriculum, I have to take a class whereby all students write a senior thesis paper(research paper). I am currently taking the class and wrote a paper in the field of bioethics. Do you guys think it is allowed to put such projects on the application? Is it worth it? I am not presenting it in a conference or anything...

If you do not have any other research experience, then I would probably suggest adding it to AMCAS, and explaining your role and responsibilities in conducting your senior thesis. Otherwise, it is probably not worth it.

If you are interested, you can probably submit an abstract of your thesis to conferences and present it as a poster/podium talk, which would help your application more than a senior thesis might.

Edit: Just noticed that you mentioned it was a class. Usage of "senior thesis" usually denotes a scholarly project submitted to your division for your degree. If it is for a class, then, no, I would definitely suggest not adding it to your application; if it is a thesis for a degree, then I would consider putting it on.

Is this a capstone project that all seniors undertake? Does it involve original research/thought? If it does and you have an extra spot on the AMCAS, I would put it in there. Bioethics is always interesting to discuss and it gives your interviewers another dimension of you.

OTOH, if this is more of a term paper that is based on others' work, and is not based on an original project of your own, then think again about including it on the AMCAS application.

Yes, you may still include it, but does it enhance your candidacy as a med school applicant?

For reference, I put my senior honors thesis on my application where I was 1 of 10 students in my large major to come up with an idea, executed it and then defended it to my professors and PI. It also led to a poster presentation at a national conference a few months after I applied.

I think my example would be Something unique that’s definitely worth adding.

I had to write a thesis for graduation from the honors college.

It was ~50 pages and based on my research from undergrad but I did a unique twist to test something novel. Those results are being used for a publication down the line.

I put the thesis in my App, and I’ve had it brought up in one interview (summarize your thesis research, or a similar question)
