Hey guys..im a long time reader but first time poster and I have a SERIOUS question....

I was wondering how in detail are the background checks done for 1) medical school 2) residency 3) medical license...

I have somethings in my past that Im not so proud of BUT I've never been charged or convicted of any crime...

However, I might have police reports on my records for stuff that can drastically affect my future. For example, I was once in a car found with marijuana and we were let go after the police took down our information...i never got charged with anything even though I was told I would and I'm pretty sure I never received a citation (never paid a fine). However, my buddy did receive a driving citation without even knowing that showed up on his insurance (never physically got the ticket in writing or mail). I've also been involved in two WAY worse situations that didn't end up with any charges being filed and that could have ended up in a FELONY charge..So my main concern is that are there police reports out there with my name that will jeopardize my future come residency and licensing?

All my past history in behind me and I've grown a lot from it (currently 25) but is this something that will come and bite me back in the future? Do I have to disclose this information? In what situations? I doubt I have to for medical school but there's really no point of going to medical school without being able to practice (I have the scores for medical school btw)

If anyone can give me a list of different background checks i can conduct on myself for med. school, residency, and licensing please let me know...

Also, please don't say medical schools look past previous actions...that might be true..but being licensed is a whole another situation..and to kids who think im trollin please don't respond..thanks everyone for the help

If you weren't charged with a crime, it won't be on your record. Don't sweat it.

If you have never been charged then it won't show up on your record. Don't ever bring it up and don't worry about it, it is in the past now.

my main concern was there was a situation where the FBI and other members high up in law enforcement were involved (drug situation) and I did receive a official letter/phone call from numerous members ...never went to court/paid a fine though (assuming i wasn't charged then)..that's defiantly not good sign..the records probably exist somewhere

Not publicly available for viewing by any criminal background checking system.

but for medical licensing you do use a FBI background check which is prly in crazy detail

Sounds like you are paranoid.

If there was no charge, then it isn't in your criminal record.

If you've never been formally charged and/or paid a fine/went to court. there is nothing to find. Most background checks are done by national contractors that basically check local and NCIC records. But only convictions show up. Report entries aren't routinely entered into NCIC. I actually have a misdemeanor record, but nothing shows up when my background is checked.

I've been told that you can run your own record through Certiphi.

Yep. $100 I think from most agencies. Might be worth it now if you're THAT concerned. It'd be better than a pulled acceptance I guess because the check won't be done until then. My school told us that only very serious crimes will cause an issue anyway (DUI, assault, etc.). Most people will have some record where I live and go to school because they say even parking tickets will show up but to not be concerned.

You can also request all of your public records from the state attorney's office for the state in which the incident occurred. They will give you a report that has ALL of the information that they would ever release to any agency or organization. This will be a little cheaper than going through certaphi if you only have one state to look at. . . . I think it costs something, but not much.

As a side note, if you want to be in the FBI, you shouldn't have used pot in the last 3 year. All other drugs? The last 10 years. Even the feds recognize that it's a stupid law against a fairly mediocre drug.

So stay clean for the next 3+ years and you'll be awesome for the government at least. 😀

OP, this is the best advice you've gotten.

Make Freedom of Information Act request for all records containing your name from both State's Attorney and District Attorney for the place(s) in question. You will find out definitively what exists and can work from there - eg order Certiphi, etc. on yourself as GynGyn suggets to find out what is actually pulled in each relevant background check.

Finally, get your **** together - if you are around people who are facing felony counts, you are definitively in the wrong circles for long-term life success.

yeah im going certiphi website but i can't find how i can request to make a background check...if anyone could post a link for the most thourough background check (pertains to my situations with incident reports) that would be awesome....any other links to background checks i should do would be awesome too...

also im mostly worried about medical licening in the future...those background checks take 4-6 months so you know they aren't messing around...anyone know how they work and how i can replicate one?

i kind of want to call adminstrations asking if i have a file of the incident but im worred they might decide to charge me since the statue of limitations is not over i think

You don't have to ask if they have a file of the incident...you just have to ask if they have anything with your name on it. If they don't, they don't. If they do, then it was already there to begin with.
