So, I am reviewing the different iron studies that can be used in the diagnosis of anemia and am confused when it comes to serum transferrin receptor (TfR) levels. What exactly is the source of serum TfR? So they come from lysed cells that normally have the transferrin recptor on their membrane? Are they produced in addition to membranous TfR and just indicate mTfR levels (similar to the relationship between serum ferritin and total body iron stores)? My notes just mention in what anemias they are up and down but don't explain the reason for why this is...I did a search on MDconsult as well, but had no luck with that...
