I want some advice on how to count service hours. I have about 160 hours doing various service projects through school, church and other activities. Where it gets tricky is, apart from the 160, I have been visiting a family member in a nursing home about 30 minutes away for a few hours each week. Is this still considered volunteer service hours since its with a family member? Also, I have visited other nursing homes, just not with that family member and I am going to count that. For the record, I have spent about 180 hours over the last few years visiting this person.
Not sure how to count this or how to go about it. Regardless I think it should be in the application and at least noted. Thoughts?

I wouldn't put it on your app. I tutored my little cousins plenty of times, but would never put that on an application.

I wouldn't put that on my app. I could definitely see adcoms frowning upon it. You're essentially asking if supporting your family member is equivalent to volunteering your time to help people for the sole reason of helping people. It's not the same thing. Why not start volunteering now at a nursing home, maybe 10 hours/week? Do that until the beginning of June and you'll have 80 volunteering hours. It's not difficult to rack up volunteer hours, it's refreshing, and energizing.
