Word on the net is that Service Pack 2 will be released to the windows updates page sometime today, 8/16/04. (or you can get it now on Microsoft's IT professionals page)

So, just a reminder to check windows update or to turn on automatic updates 👍 - SP2 promises to fix quite a few problems with Windows, as well as pump up the god-aweful excuse for a firewall Windows has now 🙂 (the new one mimics zone-alarm with the pop-up requests for network access, and it starts up even before the network is initialized during the boot sequence) I'm excited 😎 and since MS reduced the restrictions on illegal CD keys, hopefully my job as a computer tech will be made easier since people have no excuse not to get this haha (like that will stop them)

yay updates! :laugh:

Thanks, I'll wait at least a couple of weeks before I risk my computer on any crap from microsoft. You can beta (or is it alpha?) test it for us.

SP2 is designed to keep idiots from jacking up the internet. And given the vast majority of idiots that own computers, I thank Microsoft from the bottom of my heart.

Right. And, unless you know the little features it installs by default (the windows firewall, for example, which will screw up real (hardware/software) firewalls), you're hosed.

It was beta tested a while back, I believe. I d/l ed it last night from download.com. I will let you know if I have any problems with it.

LOL, that is, if you can 🙂

haha everyone that I know who has installed it already has loved it... but these have all been hardcore computer techs and network admins, so maybe that isn't saying much 😛

I'm disappointed - it doesn't look like its on windows updates yet... ah well, soon perhaps

I have only heard good things about this update. For those with tablets it is suposed to make the text input a bout 98% accurate. I can't wait to get it.

Here is a list of apps KNOWN to have problems with SP2. There may be more...

Before you upgrade, you may want to decide if you will need to open ports (and how to), and get any new drivers you may need.

Microsoft Lists Apps Affected by XP SP2
By Mary Jo Foley
Microsoft has published a list of nearly 50 software programs that require tweaking in order to work with its most recent Windows update.

In an effort to head off support calls, Microsoft has published a list of about 50 programs from both the Redmond software giant and third-party software vendors that require tweaking in order to work properly with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Among the applications that are encountering problems are Web servers, remote desktops, file-sharing applications, FTP clients, multimedia streaming software and e-mail notifications. A number of systems-management applications and games also require manual modifications in order to work properly with SP2, according to Microsoft.

"After you install Windows XP SP2, client applications may not successfully receive data from a server," acknowledges Microsoft in one of its Knowledge Base articles published to its Web site.

At the same time, some "server applications that are running on a Windows XP SP2-based computer may not respond to client requests," the Knowledge Base article added.

In the months leading up to the recent launch of its SP2 collection of security updates and other fixes, Microsoft had warned its customers that a number of its own applications would require modification in order to work correctly with SP2. Microsoft officials have warned that SQL Server 2000, Microsoft CRM 1.2 and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2 all would require tweaks.

In the recently published Knowledge Base article, Microsoft also admits that its Visual Studio .Net development tools and Systems Management Server 2003 products may require users to open network ports manually before they work properly with SP2.

"To work correctly, some programs and games must receive information over the network. The information enters your computer through an inbound port. For (the new SP2) Windows Firewall to permit this information to enter, the correct inbound port must be open on your computer," Microsoft notes in its Knowledge Base article.

Other third-party programs which may require users to open ports manually in order to work with SP2 include:

# Autodesk's AutoCAD 2000, 2002 and 2004 releases;

# BMC Software's BMC Patrol for Windows 2000;

# Computer Associates' ARCserve and eTrust 7.0 releases;

# Macromedia's ColdFusion MX Server Edition 6;

# Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 and Ghost Server Corporate Edition 7.5; and

# Vertitas' Backup Exec version 9 and Volume Manager 3.1 products.

Among the third-party games that may require SP2 tweaks are several products from Atari, Electronic Arts' "Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2," and Activision's Star Trek StarFleet Command III version 1.0.

There are other third-party applications that are encountering difficulties with SP2 that are not included on Microsoft's Knowledge Base list. While Microsoft is characterizing SP2 as a "critical" upgrade and encouraging all XP users to upgrade to it as soon as possible, many IT managers are holding off from pushing SP2 to users' desktops until they are able to thoroughly test its effect on custom and third-party applications. Last week, Microsoft published a toolkit allowing IT managers to temporarily block SP2 from installing before they are ready for it.

Microsoft is rolling out XP SP2 in stages. On August 16, Microsoft is set to begin pushing SP2 to XP users automatically via its Automatic Update and Software Update Services patch-management services. Microsoft already has made the update available to customers who had been beta testing the service pack and to developers. PC makers and retailers are expected to begin offering SP2 this fall.

"REDMOND, Wash. - Microsoft Corp. has delayed automated distribution of a major security upgrade to its Windows XP operating system, citing a desire to give companies more time to test it.

The update, dubbed Service Pack 2, won't be available to companies that use Windows XP Professional until at least Aug. 25, Windows product manager John Murchinson said Tuesday. The rollout had been scheduled for Aug. 16. "

Once again, those that went first got it first.

There but for the grace of G-D, go I. I'm so happy I'm not an IT guy any more

Hi, warning: newbie question... 😳 I got the prompt to get service pack 2 but I messed up and lost it. How do I get it back so I can download it?

just installed sp2 the other day. i guess the annoying thing i've noticed in ie6 is that wheenver i go to sd, ie6 keeps making noises whenver it blocks a popup and stuff.

you can turn the sounds off by going to tools ---> pop-up blocker ---> pop-up blocker settings. Then, under notifications and filter settings, just uncheck the option to play a sound. 👍

I'll gladly wait a while before I touch SP2. I already had to completley overhaul my comptuer once this month. Don't want to mess with it again.

I just installed SP2. Absolutely no problems here. Just make sure to check for viruses and do a defrag and restart your computer before installing. And don't upgrade if you have other underlying problems. It's like doing hernia surgery on a heart attack victim. 🙂

Thanks Microsoft.

Dallenoff is right, do not install SP2 when you have viruses on your computer. I have had one computer (note, only one) that had a lot of viruses, and after I tried installing SP2, after the restart, it wouldn't boot, and now needs a reformat. However, I have installed it successfully with no problems on dozens of other computers over the last few weeks (including my own personal computer) with no problems whatsoever 👍

BTW, if you're at UCLA (living on campus or in university apts), you might as well install SP2 now. We're supposedly putting in a check for SP2 in the registration process.

actually, it's better to do a defrag AFTER you install SP cuz of all the temprorary files it's creating/moving around during the installation process. you can request a free sp2 from microsoft by going to microsoft.com and looking around for the link.
