Did most of you do this? How does it work? Do I simply create a new email then change my email address in eras and have a special alert on my phone for when this email address gets an email?

Whatever you use, I would just make sure that you can get your e-mail on your phone and be able to check it frequently. At some of the institutions I received invitations from, being able to respond quickly to an interview invite was very beneficial, and if you were too slow you may not be able to schedule a date at all since they're all taken.

Agree that it's not necessary to make a completely separate e-mail unless your e-mail address is childish or inappropriate. Just make sure you can get real-time notifications wherever you are.

Unless the username is incredibly unprofessional, why? Why not just use your school account?

A new email can help limit your new mail notifications to residency interview/app related emails only. I don’t know about you, but 2/3rds of messages sent to my school email are are trash - there’s a decent chance I’d lose my mind if I have to frantically check each of these messages for interview invites.

This was one of the best pieces of advice I got. Absolutely use a separate e-mail for residency alone. It was great because I was studying for CK right after ERAS went out so I was able to silence all notifications except the residency e-mail account so if my phone buzzed, I knew it was because that account got an e-mail and 9 times out of 10 it was an interview invite (ERAS/NRMP unfortunately sends you a number of BS e-mails).

If I were on the floors I think it would have been even more necessary to avoid looking like the student "who is always on his phone not paying attention," and because getting those non-interview e-mails was always such a let down. Can't imagine what it would be like if I was getting notified all the time and the majority were unrelated e-mails.

Let me tell you something (and this is coming from a guy that spend over a decade in the defense sector before going to med school) if that's the amount of email that's gonna push you over the edge, you are in deep and serious smelly stuff with regards to your impending profession.

Have you started clinical rotations yet? Not to be rude, but if you haven't, you don't know what you're talking about.

You want to minimize the number of times you have to pull out your phone during a rotation to respond to interview invitations because spots fill up FAST and you don't want to look like you're preoccupied with your phone in front of attendings (though many probably understand that's interview season).

Also, spam is spam. Best to minimize it if you can. You don't have to take it lying down for macho points or whatever.

I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about an entire career's worth of emails. The daily onslaught of silly crap one must contend with. Not to be rude, but pay attention to what I actually said, not just the narrow scope of what you want to address.

Good thing you brought this up, he was 100% being completely serious without even the slightest bit of embellishment. Too many e-mails and he will absolutely tailspin into psychosis. Get over yourself.

The narrow scope of what he wants to address is the topic of this thread and his/her post... All of us contend with many useless emails regularly, but during this particular period, some like to create a new email for the sake of residency invites, especially if still on rotations. Fair or not, people tend to assume the worst of you if you're on your phone a lot.

Hey chuckles he's the one who said he had a fair chance of losing his mind so tell your story walkin'.

....uh, okay? I’m 100% sure I’ll be able to handle whatever comes at me, even without having spent a significant amount of time in the defense sector.

Although what I said was a bit dramatic, setting up the separate email will be helpful for limiting the time I spend looking at my phone while on rotations. I’d rather scrub out to respond to one email that is highly likely to be app-related, than having to check five junk emails from student interest groups, etc. I’m probably just a weakling pansy for being a good student though🙄
