Hey guys. Can any of you guys comment on the areas of Temple, Scholl and NYCPM...are the areas safe? How's life there?

I know that NYCPM is situated in a not so hot part of Harlem (I'm a NYC resident), but i've heard that their clinic is very lively.

How about Temple and Scholl? I know that Philly and Chicago are busy cities, and they probably have good and bad areas. How are the areas of these schools? Thanks.

Temple's School of Podiatry is in Center City and it is across the street from the Philadelphia police station. It is definitely one of the nicer areas of Philadelphia from what I saw. The Temple main campus however is located in north Philadelphia which is not so nice.

I cannot comment on Scholl as I have never been there.....but I do know that north Chicago is very nice so I imagine scholl is in a decent area.

Is the Temple Podiatry school on the Temple University main campus? Can any of the temple students or interviewees comment on the area?

My husband and I just got back yesterday from Chicago, as I'm starting Scholl in the fall and we had to find a place to live. Scholl is in a city called North Chicago, which is actually almost 40 miles north of the downtown Chicago area. The school itself seems like it's in a nice area, it's surrounded by a bunch of Navy buildings, and then neighborhoods on the other side. It's just north of Lake Forest, which is a really nice, pretty expensive place to live (if you're in a house). We were looking for houses to rent, but there are a lot of nice apartment complexes nearby, and lots of nice neighborhoods to live in if you're thinking of renting a house. IMO, I'd be wary about living in Waukegan, as some areas are pretty rough, and I've heard living in North Chicago is bad (but not really where the school is). Some nice areas that are closeby include Gurnee, Grayslake, Libertyville, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff. PM me if you need more ideas.

After our trip, I'm even more convinced I made the right choice in deciding to go to Scholl. Besides the school, which I obviously really liked, the neighborhoods were well kept & safe, and there seems to be lots to do. Besides there being a lot of dining, etc. nearby, you're only a short train ride away from the city. We found a house the first day of our trip, so we spent two other days downtown. It was a blast!

Good luck on your decision. And to echo other threads, definitely visit all the schools you are considering. That way you'll find which one fits you best!

temple podiatry school is not located on main campus. tuspm is located away away from the ghettos of philly.
google map 8th and race st., thats where the pod school is. tuspm is located near chinatown. if students need to get to main campus, theres a shuttle stop right outside the pod school.

also, the pod graduate housing complex is right next to the school. across the school are a series of apts that some students (ive heard) rent.

hope that helps. good luck!

TUSPM is located in the downtown area of Philadelphia called Center City. The school is located in the Chinatown section of Center City. Center City is currently one of the more desirable places where the younger professional are looking to live. It is nothing like the North Philadelphia neighborhood where the Medical School and Main Campus are located.

I live in Gurnee. It is about a 15 minute drive to campus. I live in AMLI at Osprey Lakes. It is a very nice complex that has tennis courts, weight room (free weights, treadmills, elliptical machines, stair climbers, etc), 2 pools (indoor and outdoor), walking trail (just spotted some beavers a few weeks ago).

The Gurnee area is really nice. The Lake Forest, Grayslake, Libertyville areas are nice as well. I have kids so I wanted to be sure I was in a good school district. I currently rent because it was hard to rent a house that didn't have all kinds of restrictions (no pets primarily). I have 2 dogs. I also don't plan to stay in Illinois once I am done with school, so I didn't want to buy a house either.

Here are a few area things
Grand Avenue (Gurnee): Six Flags, Target, mall (movie theater there as well), various restaurants (Olive Garden, Lone Star Steakhouse, Taco Bell, KFC, Panera Bread, etc....)

Rockland Road (close to campus): Panera Bread, The Silo (good pizza), Dominick's grocery store, Chase Bank, Fatman Bowl, Harley Davidson motorcycle shop

Greenbay Road: many fast food places (Popeye's, Wendy's, Boston Market, McDonald's), Jewel Osco grocery store

There is a large mall farther away...Northbrook Mall
There is outlet stores in Kenosha, WI....which is just down Rt. 41. close to gurnee.

There is a Walmart, Starbucks, Buffalo Wild Wings close to campus as well.

Does anyone live in evanston or closer to downtown? I interview on Nov. 7th and am curious about the areas surrounding. Also, does anyone know what my chances are of being accepted since I have an interview?

I don't know anyone personally that lives in Evanston or closer to downtown, but I know a lot more students move that way 3rd & 4th year.

I do know two physician's assistant students at RFUMS that live downtown and take the train to and from campus everyday. They don't necessarily like the commute, but they enjoy the city life and look at their train ride as force-study time.

As for acceptance just based on your getting an interview, that totally depends. So long as you don't bomb the interview, have a decent GPA & MCAT, you shouldn't have any issues.
