FIrst of all, CONGRATS to everyone that just matched!! It must feel pretty amazing.
I'm a 3rd year MS planning on applying to ophthalmology. My medical school is mediocre and less well known outside the region, but otherwise have a strong enough application for ophtho: Good Step 1 for ophtho, doing well in clerkships, lots of ophtho research at one of the top programs, (pending) big wig letters, and a long term interest/knowledge of the field. My med school is less well-known but I really hard worker, knowledgeable about ophtho and generally well-liked on rotations; so aways seem like a great advantage for someone like myself.
It's been mentioned on some other threads that contacting the programs and "reserving" a spot prior to applications is a good idea. Any thoughts? I'm currently debating between rotations at NYEE (or other NYC programs), Wills, Wilmer, MEEI, BPEI, and possibly some Chicago programs. If anyone has any advice regarding experience with aways at these locations or (great experiences at other programs), advice on finding contact information, and when to contact them, it would be greatly appreciated!
Also, for those who did aways at these locations, can you provide details like: 2 wks or 4 wks? Did you work with residents or attendings? Were interviews offered to students rotating there? Anything about the elective that you liked/didn't like (ie opportunities to work 1:1 with attendings, specialty clinics, ect).
Feel free to send it as a PM or post it here.
Thanks!!
