Hi. I'm in danger of getting a C or even a D in my government class. My college only allows retake for failed grades, and D is technically a passing grade. Should I study hard and get a C (highest i can get with a 100% on my final exam) or intentionally fail and retake it later for a higher grade? The failed grade and the retaken grade will be both posted on my transcript. Numerically, retaking would be better as long as I can get an A (1 (F) + 4 (A) / 2 = 2.5, which is better than a 2.0 I'd be getting with a C) but I'm worried that having a F on a transcript, even if I make it up with a A, would be detrimental. Or should i withdraw from the course entirely? But that would place me under the minimum number of credits for good academic standing.

What should I do?

Get a D. An F is bad on any transcript, even with a retake.

Try for the C (if not, then take the D).

Man I've really done it this semester. B- in Spanish, probably a D in this gov course, C in politics, and probably a C+ in intro chemistry.

1 bad semester isn't going to kill you. You just have to pull high grades the rest of undergrad.

Honestly, one or two bad semesters won't hurt your chances. I think it more important to do phenomenal your last 2 years of undergrad, which is usually where you take all the advanced courses.

settle for the C. Then study your ass off the rest of college and be prepared to explain over and over again how you improved.

Interviewer: So evomax01, why did you get a D in this class?

evomax01: Well interviewer, I was getting a C so I tanked it so I could retake and get a higher GPA!

I took a W this semester because I was worried I was going to fail the test (I never took the test).

too late for the W?

C is fine... I got a C in history and no one ever asked me about it when I went for interviews.

Freshman year wasn't that great either. 3.2 looks better than this semester, but you guys are right. I will definitely pull 3.8+ for the remaining semesters, get some research positions, and do well on the MCAT. No need to wallow in my pit of dispair. If I don't get in the first try, maybe I can do more research or a SMP program, and then reapply. Not the end of the world. Thanks guys.

I don't think most schools would ask if they saw a C as long as they aren't very common on your transcript. Just show an upward trend from now on and you should be solid.
