Seven on/Seven off Schedule

So, out of curiosity, what does everyone think of that type of work schedule for a medical career? And which careers operate on it? I know that hospitalists do, but i was unsure if any others do.

I think it's plenty doable. I have a feeling lots of hospitalists and maybe even EM docs use this sort of scheduling.

However...not sure on how practical it is. You may be working at 7 days on/7 days off, but the rest of the world is one 5 days on/2 days off. It you have other hobbies (music, kiddies, date night, etc) and such it might be kinda hard to line up other things outside of work on this "work weeks". See what I mean?

I'm an ER scribe. It's not common, but our docs do a 7 on 7 off schedule. They have 5-6 8 hour shifts, and 1-2 12 hours. Shifts are 6A-2P, 2P-10P, 10P-6A, or 8-8. It's something like 4 months of days (6-2/2-10/8-8) and then 2 months of nights. I think it's a pretty slick schedule.

Yeah, long term the effects on your body are fairly staggering.

Hospitalists generally start at about 200k. There are also 8-5 M-F hospitalist positions, and I don't think they're too uncommon.

No, it doesn't mean that. If you work 7 10 hour days in 2 weeks that's 70 hours, which is only slightly fewer than working 2 weeks of M-F 8 hour days.

Hospitalists generally start at about 200k. There are also 8-5 M-F hospitalist positions, and I don't think they're too uncommon.

I don't know for sure, but I've heard our docs make in the 180-200/hr range, so they're making ~275-300k. Some of them, especially the younger guys, do a lot of moon lighting on their off weeks too.

This type of schedule is going to become more popular in all fields as we turn to more of a hospitalist mentality. There are even such things as surgical hospitalists now who work a somewhat similar schedule. But for right now the majority of people working these types of hours would be EM and Medical Hospitalists, I am sure you could make it work with Rads too..

Yes. But you don't work "half the time"

You work about 70-80 hours a week during one week so essentially you're doing a lot more work than a normal internist would do so you get a week off to compensate

So basically like a resident working half the time? (Residents usually work 70-80 hours on average per week).
