So, In my first class of Human Sexuality today, Sex Surrogacy came up (it was in regards to the ethics of therapist/counselor-client having sexual relations). I'm just curious as to people's view on this?

Basically, for those that don't know, in layman's terms, it's is legalized prostitution, although on a deeper level, it's not. It's similar to what a physical therapist does.

A client comes in and has trouble meeting someone or starting/maintaining a relationship with someone. They talk to the therapist/counselor, and after awhile, the therapist/counselor contacts the sex surrogate, who coaches the client (from how to act in public to even how to have sex, etc). Often times, the client will want to form lasting bonds with the sex surrogate (who is usually their first serious contact), but if the sex surrogate has been making sure about the boundaries, after a while, he/she should be able to sever it. Many of these sex surrogates have families, etc, but to them, this isn't sex, but a job. Like I said, similar to a physical therapist who will treat someone after damage, that is what a sex surrogate does.

so...what are your thoughts?

Illegal, unethical and immoral. People lose their licenses over this all the time.

really? hm...it's not the therapist or counselor, but someone else entirely. I guess I'll have to wait until we get to that section before I learn more, but the impression I got from the prof, it sounded legal.

Absolutely 100% not OK. An egregious ethics violation.

This isn't for real, is it?

well, looking at the syllabus, it doens't look like I'll be learning more about it until 3/13. On March 1st, Bill Nye is lecturing on the Evolution of Sex 😀

Sex surrogacy is not the same as prostitution.

Whether or not you feel it is ethical or moral, is one thing. However,I do not believe it is illegal as long as there are two consenting adults.

Surrogates are NOT the therapist. What's interesting is that many surrogates have come from the adult industry (screened to be D&DF) so they are not likely to "fall in love" or have an emotional attachment to the client. In fact, that is why they are hired -- for their professionalism, if you will. From what I have gathered, surrogacy is not usually used as a tool to teach people how to date or ask others out but mostly for help on the physiological side of things -- e.g. erectile issues/performance anxiety (in fact I have heard their #1 clients are older-adult male virgins), teaching masturbation techniques, etc.

But what the hell do I know! Just my $.02!

how are the surrogates compensated? I'm assuming there is some sort of payment involved... ok, two people don't know each other, are "set up" by another person to have sex with each other, then a monetary transaction occurs, then the surrogates just leaves the picture.... hmmmm, now insert the following where it applies: dirty old man, the call girl, and the madam.

Is this type of sex therapy only legal in Vegas? sorry couldn't resist...

I'm no sex therapy expert but I don't see how the actual sex therapy could not be applied with a couple that are romantically involved... if the person is not involved with someone in the first place and wants to but is having difficulties, then the sex act is not the primary issue, most likely intepersonal relationship issues, social skills, etc should be the target of the therapy first... performance anxiety could be dealt within the realms of a relationship, in fact, that's probably the primary issue...
