I was having a discussion with another pre-med friend and we were unsure whether it's a good idea to mention sexuality in a secondary application. It seems like a good answer for questions regarding advertise/challenges overcome or adding diversity to a class, but are people in the LGBT community discriminated against by adcomms? I've seen a few past threads on here, but they are from several years ago.

What do you guys think? Is it a good thing to mention nowadays for those questions or is it opening you up to getting rejected?

I would think it wouldn't be taboo and certainly could see how it adds to diversity/facing hardships.

"No."

I think it completely depends on the school to which you are applying. Some schools have a much more liberal view than others. So for schools like Loma Linda, you obviously probably wouldn't mention something like that, but maybe schools like Columbia would find it diversifying.

As with the more controversial topics, avoid getting on the soapbox, try to keep it focused on you, and keep it positive. I have a friend that discussed mental health issues in his family and the stigma associated with that in his PS, but he kept the focus on how this taught him to withhold judgment and accept others, got him interested in medicine, etc etc. He avoided discussing the way the medical community treats patients with mental health problems and what should be fixed and I thought it was really well done.

I don't think the LGBT is outwardly discriminated against, but you might never know who your reader might be. Just choose your angle carefully and know your school!
