Hi everyone!

There was a separate thread going on the Integrated Science Program pre-reqs, but thought it would be good to create a separate thread for all of those pre-med students in the Bay Area.
I am looking for expedited Physics and OChem courses in the area. Are there are any other programs out there that you know of?

Here's a few program comparisons for Physics 1+2 and Ochem 1+2 for what I've been able to find:

  • ISP:
    • cost per course: $2,273 x 4 classes = $9,092
    • time to completion = 4 months (1 class=1 month on weekends)
  • UC Berkeley Post-Bacc:
    • cost: $7,590 for 4 classes
    • time to completion: 4 semesters/2 years (evening weekday classes)
  • Santa Clara Intensive Lab Sciences:
    • cost: $586/unit x 15 units for ONE year of classes (physics or ochem) = $8,790 x 2 courses = $17,580
    • time to completion: 9 weeks over the summer for ONE class, 2 summers for both classes

It looks like ISP only takes 4 months, has more flexible scheduling with classes starting every month, and ends up being only $1500 more than Berkeley. For those of us who can only take 1 class at a time, you'd have to weigh the benefit of whether an extra $1500 is worth it for 1.5 years less of classes (but no weekends or free time for 4 months). What I'm not sure about though is whether adcoms would look favorably upon ISP. And obviously Berkeley would have better resources and community for pre-meds.

If anyone knows any other classes, feel free to add to the thread.

While I'm really enamored by the idea of getting courses done quickly with ISP, I am pretty sure I am going to go with Berkeley. I've yet to see any successful story of acceptance with ISP, and I'd rather dedicate my time/money to something I know has history and reputation.

I am doing (at least hope to be) doing Touro's MSMHS program. I am also going DO so it works well for me 🙂 Have you heard of JFKU's weekend intensives? Patten used to offer them but now JFKU took over that program. Right now they have their 2013 schedule up. They are a bit behind on posting the classes on their site but they are another alternative. 4 weeks...The reason I'm going the Touro route or some other University route is because if it's a cert or degree program then it's covered by financial aid. Since I'm a nontraditional student I definitely need the extra courses and preparation to apply to med school. Also, if you do okay on the MCAT and get a 3.0 at Touro in that program...you get an automatic interview for their DO program and according to their site 90-100% of the students who do it...get accepted. It's a one year intense MS degree. Just wanted to put it out there! 🙂 If anyone is local and looking for study buddy meetups etc on the weekends or evenings feel free to PM me. It would be so nice to meet some other premed's in the area. All my friends are in the financial industry unfortunately 🙁 Goodluck!
