Hi,

I was wondering if someone could help me with some questions on the SF Match for Neurology. I was just on their website, and I am a little confused about the term "two-tiered" match.

According to the website, about one-third of all positions will remain unfilled after the match results are announced in January.

Instead of being available for scramble immediately, as in the NRMP match, these positions are held over and are offered in the next year's match.

Based on my current understanding, this means that a student could decide to do Neurology at the end of fourth year, and match the following January for a spot that begins the following July--this student would not have to lose a year.

Can anyone tell me if my understanding is correct? This is an important issue to me, as I am a third year trying to decide between several different specialties, and I don't know if I can do a Neuro elective in time for the early match.

Does it sound right that one-third of Neuro programs don't fill the first time?

Thanks.

you're absolutely correct. The design is specifically tailored to those who do not match as a senior, and those who need extra time (ie. internship year) to decide whether neuro is a right career for them. However, most competitive programs will be filled through regular(first tier) match, and I don't know where these unfilled spots are from.
