I was wondering if there is any reason to get in your application before the target date of September 3rd for this years ophtho match. I have all my letters and have finished my aways, but I have some research ongoing that I expect to submit for publication very soon. Therefore, it hopefully will be accepted around end of August. Should I wait until late August and see if it is accepted before sending my application, as long as I am before the target date? Or since I have most of my application complete, should I shoot for getting it in early.

This is a question I remember pretty heavily from when I also was applying. There are various thoughts on this...

To me it seems that as long as you get your application in time for the individual program(s) you're interested in, then there is NO problem with waiting. Whenever you look at the interview date threads (on here), it seems like each program offers interviews (and rejections) in email (or phone call or snail mail) on a specific date...i.e. when they are done looking at their applicants.

There are few programs with rolling interview offers (and those may just be when they fill in a cancellation???). Thus, I would hold off until late August if you think it will help your application. I held off until the actual target date because I had one big thing to add...and it paid off handsomely in my opinion.

GOOD LUCK to this years applicants.

should we be sumitting apps now? or is august early enough?

Try to submit it by or on the "SF Match target date" because almost all programs have their individual application dates around then.

SF Match last year processed applications as they received them (not in batches like before)...so it took me maybe 2-3 days TOTAL to get my application through the system.

Look at your list of programs and make sure your application is to the SF Match people at least a week ahead of the earliest target date (as listed for the program on SFMatch.org) and you should be fine. Columbia and Mayo I think had the earliest listed dates last year (at least according to the programs I applied to), but I'm sure this changes year-to-year.

If the application is done, just go ahead and send it in...if not, dont stress about gettin it done this week. Just get it in when everything is on your application (and you've made sure to spell "Ophthalmology" correctly EVERYWHERE 🙂).

GOOD LUCK

That being said, take the database on the SFmatch website with a grain of salt. Many of the deadlines had not been updated from the previous year! The only way to know a school's deadline for sure it to contact them. That aside, I think the best bet is to make sure you have it in by the target date at the latest.
