Hello, I'm planning to start taking the science courses at SFSU in Fall 06 to take the necessary science classes to apply for med/pharmacy schools. Has anybody gone to SFSU for pre-med classes? I have a few specific questions regarding to the program.

1. Do you know if I have to be admitted as a regular student even though I'm not seeking a degree?

If so,

2. To apply as a post-bac student at SFSU, do I have to have the GE classes (written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and quantitative reasoning) completed? I have a degree from out of state, and not sure which classes will satisfy those GE classes.

3. I think I can use the CSU mentor site for submitting my application. If so, how do I send in my statement of purpose and my transcripts from my previous universities?

4. How many words the statement of purpose should be?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there. I hope I can be helpful - I recently went through the process of applying to the CSUs, including SFSU.

1. To do post-bac work at SFSU, you have three options:

A. Apply as an undergraduate seeking a bachelor's degree. For Fall 2006 the CSU/UC application filing deadline was November 30 - I do not know if SFSU is accepting late applications. I also do not know the filing deadline for Spring 2007, which may be another option.

B. Do something called Open University, which I believe involves slightly higher tuition and later registration.

C. Wait until February (we're in the end of February, though, right? well, wait until they get around to it), when they will unveil some sort of formal postbac program that you can apply to.

Read all about your options here: http://online.sfsu.edu/~brothman/Post-Bac2.HTM

The rest of this info applies to Option A:

2. If you have your degree, you do not need to satisfy the GE requirements. (What a relief! I was trying to fill out my CSU application before I found this out, and with my private school degree it felt like attempting to fill out tax forms with nothing but 5 years of old bank statements!)

3. There is a process outlined on the CSU Mentor site for submitting transcripts to individual each campus. CSUs do not accept any form of essay or statement of purpose. It's purely a numbers game - I was shocked when I called SFSU, frantic over whether I'd be admitted, and was asked, "Well, did you have over a 2.5 GPA in your undergraduate degree? Okay, you'll get your acceptance online in a few days."

4. As mentioned above, you're off the hook.

Good luck!

Thanks for replying to my post, Adradr. It's a relief to know that I don't have to worry about the GE classes!

I'll be applying to SFSU very soon as a transfer student, as I just found out that SFSU is still open for the Fall 2006 Post-Bac applicants (they treat the post-bac students as transfer students).

If you don't mind me asking, which program are you in at SFSU? Did you apply for the biology department? SFSU has a lot of different programs, and I haven't decided which science program I should apply for.

Thanks!
