Hey guys, as some of you may be aware - the area of family medicine/gp is absolutely awesome in Canada. Right now im considering sgu as a backup to Canadian medical schools. How realistic is it to go to sgu and to match in Canada for fam med?

ty for all your replies 👍

many canadians are known to gain admission successfully to sgu. my friends (from U of Toronto) are right now at SGU 👍 they told me that they recently got matched with

IM-University of west Ontario
Opthalmology-U of Ottawa

EM-U of Toronto
Derm-U of Toronto
FM-U of Toronto

i think as long as you have good board scores (along with grades during med school), letter of recommendations, etc. but also a relationship to canada then you can match back home 🙂

U of Toronto seems to be friendly 😀

I am not so sure it is quite as rosy as this. Last year there were 1497 IMG's participating in CaRMS. 274 matched in the first round, a match rate of 18%. Of the remaining 1233, 1232 participated in the second round, where 106 obtained a spot (8.6%). Hence the final match percentage was 274+106 / 1497 = 25%.

Match results by international school are not released, but are released by region. For Central America / Carib, there were 222 applicants in the match, of which 65 ultimately got a spot (29%). Not hopeless, but by no means an easy road.
