greetings,

there might have been a previous post/thread about his subject but i can't/unwilling search for it at this time so i thought i'd just go ahead and ask. i was wondering if there are any neurosurgery residents/interested neurosurgery applicant that graduated from st. george's university SOM. i can only trace back a couple of years on the residency match list and i didn't seem to find anybody that matched although i found someone who transferred from SGU to U of Miami then went on to a neurosurgery residency. anyways, any input or info will be greatly appreciated.

If you have to ask, no.

Not that NS residents haven't come out of SGU. But if YOU have to ask, then YOU won't be getting that spot. It is very competitive for a reason. A PD will not look at an FMG without extenuating circumstances- like the candidate was a grad in India or the UK, practiced for 10 years as a NS, wrote a textbook on NS, then moved to the US for other reasons. There are enough highly competent candidates who DID get into a US school.

Sorry for the honesty.

And, if you believe that horse dung, you deserve it. No offense to the person who is saying that crap. Don't let anything stop you from getting it. There is always a "reason" so and so got this or that when no one else did. It's simple, they did not listen to anyone else. They just did what they wanted to do, and ignored comments like these. This person has absolutely no idea what you, me or anyone else on the planet is going to get or when. He does not make the decision, and he probably never will, certainly not for you. Unless, you listen to what he is saying, buy it, and then quit. Go for it! Do not let anything stop you. I for example, know you can get it. I believe in you completely. How do I know? I don't know for sure, I just believe in you sooo much that I say I know. Only the future will tell. Go get it! Try! Best wishes!

wow, two replies that represent both extremes. thanks for the input, though. 😎 i know of a neurosurgery resident (pgy 1) that came from ross university (look at http://www.mcw.edu/display/router.asp?docid=1641) so i was thinking that sgu would have at least 1 person who took this path.

Call Chris up and ask how he got the spot. Find out about what research he had under his belt, what he did before medicine.

hey steve... how goes it? are you the grad from sgu i knew?
Yes a gal in my class is a NS resident but no, you dont go offshore if you need to be a neurosurgeon.
Is it possible? yes. can you trasnfer and do it? yes. its it common or likely? no. again if you have to be a NS to be happy, youre running a big risk. Wishful thinking doesnt do it anymore than it will keep you in med school. you have to work for it and even then it doesnt always come. but if you can live with that, heck go and give it a go.

Did you marry Hugh?
Did we live in the Coast Guard house together with Lillian, Scottish Bob, and Kathy Dunn (Marshall now)?

I did a PMR residency and fellowed in Pain Medicine at EMory. Now I'm the asst Program Director at the PMR Pain Fellowship. I work with NS every day. Not much interest in the offshore docs. Hurts a programs reputation. But for the extraodinary individual.....PM me.

Yes, Yes, Yes How wonderful are all of the wonderful wonderful American medical school doctors? And, how awful us lowly "non" American medical school doctors are? How we must sully the wonderful reputation of the wonderful "American" doctors and hospitals? Last I checked there were a # of Canadian doctors who are miles ahead of American doctors. I just bet there are some doctors in the Middle East, Asia and Europe who are better than American doctors. I'll take you folks on any day! Bring it on! I'll be happy to put my step 1 scores up with you or any other "wonderful" American doctor! Any day, any time. I am going to be better than any of you. Harvard, Hopkins, Wash U, or any other school, my tail!!! I just don't want you slackers (the American docs) tarnishing my reputation. Oooppppssss, that is not going to happen because I am tooooo strong to allow that to happen. I can carry those losers if I have to. They can take their "American" doc attitude and shove it. We are not intimidated by the American docs because we know a lot of them are garbage when it comes to medicine. In fact, a lot of problems in US medicine comes from the sorry US docs. They are too gutless to take the blame, so they turn to the scapegoat, foreign grads. One problem now is that foreign grads are not as desperate as they used to be, so they can stand up to some of those obnoxious US docs. The foreign grads realize the US docs are not sooo wonderful. I'll be happy to embarass any program director of any hospital any day, any time. I love to work with folks, but no one is going to look down on us. It is crap. If the US docs think they are better than me, bring it on! That is a joke. I do not care if they work at Harvard or what they have done. They cannot and will never hang with me when it comes to medicine. And, unlike these people, I am willing to work with everyone, foreign grad or not. It would be my pleasure to work with a foreign grad. I would be honored, whether they are exceptional or not. I will be honored to stand and work with them, any day!🙂

this is really the kind of attitude that will get you nowhere...get a clue. you're making yourself look really bad.

I've been competing at a very high level for a long time, and I know very well people do not get offended until they feel threatened. American med students and docs have had their way in the US for years now, and foreign grads had to take the obnoxious attitudes of these people for years because they wanted to practice in the US. Well, times are changing, better docs are getting trained all over the world, and now these folks do not have the escape goats they once had. Now, they have to face the fact that a lot of times the screw ups in medicine are becasuse of the US docs and no one else. Wasn't it a US doc who killed the girl at the wonderful Duke hospital? What if that would have been a foreign grad? We would still be talking about it. Fact is, Duke blew it and killed, literally killed, that girl, tried to cover it up according to her family, and now all is forgotten. A major medical blunder by a US doctor and Duke hospital. Yet, they come out finally and admit it was their mistake, and the rest of the world, especially the US docs, simply accepts it and says oh well. I've seen shows on public tv, in fact they recently ran a short 3 -4 program series on medical blunders by Hopkins. No docs in the US give it a second thought, but let a foreign grad make the same mistake, and it is the end of the world for foreign grads. It is a double standard, and we all know it. Fianlly, foreign grads are stepping up and letting folks know about it. So, naturally the American med students and docs do not like anyone standing up to them. Toooo baaaddddd!!!!! I'm not impressed, and I sure as hell am not intimidated. Medicine in the US is about competition, and if you do not want to compete, go sit on the sidelines and continue to provide subpar medicine to your unsuspecting patients. All the while, they think you are doing your best for them, when you really are not, and you know it. Not you personally, but any doc who does not want to compete and try to do their very best. Those docs are failing their patients; they are the ones who give medicine a bad reputation. Whining about the workload, hours, patients and everything under the sun. Poor me here I am at 3am taking care of so and so who will never leave me alone. Booo hooo, how terrible it is. Well, why did you go into medicine? Go home! If you don't want to give your life to medicine, then get out. I get sick of hearing how wonderful the US docs are, yet they are the first ones to whine and cry about the hours and their workload. This is where we differ, I want the hours, the more the better; I want the workload, the more the better. In fact, I can do mine and theirs, and I will gladly do it. You will never hear me whining about medicine. I love medicine, and I love my patients! Seems to me, I'm the only one with the right attitude! See you on the wards, if you can keep up!
