How do I find a DO to shadow? Do I just open the yellow pages and start looking? Should I go to their clinic in person to ask the doctor or will a phone call do?

http://www.osteopathic.org/directory.cfm

i used that website....just search in your city and zip and all the DOs that are registered will pop up. you can even search by specialty.... I picked out docs that did something i was intersted in, and sent them all a letter saying who i was, why i was interested, and some accomplishments....... basically a mini resume.

i got a response from most of them (most of them were no) and one of them agreed to let me shadow for the summer. it worked out well.

If you go to the FAQ at the top of the page, the one that says *FAQ* Please read first or do a Search before posting you'll find several links to threads just like this one where it's already been discussed.

If that's not enough, I did a search myself and came up with some of these:

Hopefully, you can find an answer somewhere in there.

Is shadowing at all awkward? Could someone out there briefly outline their experience shadowing? Is Shadowing emergency medicine possible?

It depends on the doctor's personality and yours as well. It would be nice if the doctor you'll be shadowing is a sociable person, that way it would be easy for you two to get to know each other, which would more likely lead to a good recommendation. So I suggest you should try to shadow more than one doctor to assess which recommendation would you rather turn in to medical schools.

I shadowed a psychiatrist for 4 hrs total in 2wks and he told me that he's ready to write me the letter and will be turning it in a couple of days. Should I use his letter since I've only known him for such a short time? I'm also shadowing a family doctor and she will be writing me a recommendation as well. The latter doctor actually takes the time to get to know me and haven't mentioned the recommendation since I asked her from the beginning of my shadowing. Would it hurt my application if I turn in both recommendations? Or should I just turn in the letter from the 2nd doctor?
