i always thought shadowing doctors is just learning more about that field and what those doctors do during their days, which doesn't take too many hours. but do med schools want to see a LOT of hours of shadowing or are they fine with some shadowing hours and more volunteer/clinical work? i shadowed 2 doctors for 8 hours each.. i'm planning to shadow a few more but not for long each, possibly also 8-16 hours. just wondering if that should be okay.

also if i volunteer in a hospital, ie. ER, does that that count for both volunteer and clinical? Thanks

(i accidentally made this thread in chance me section, i remade it here cause no one loosk at that section)

I think it sounds like you're in pretty good shape with what you've done and plan to do. I would for sure try to get one doctor who you spend at the very least 16 hours with, it would be really cool if you could get 20-40.

And also the ER volunteering would defiantly count as clinical and volunteer experience and a really great thing to do. Just don't be like me and think because you're around docs it will be considered as job shadowing too. Sounds like you have a great balance of activities though.

One of the docs I shadow just lets me drop in whenever I have free time. The good thing about this is we've started to develop a relationship so I think a good rec will come from him. The only thing is he's a doc from the carib (AUC) but since he did his residency at VCU it's probably still good. He's the best doc I've ever been around anyway.

Oh, so i guess we dont really need a lot of hours of shadowing. thats good! i plan on shadowing a primary next time, probably over spring break!

I would get more than 16, but you don't need an excessive amount, no. After a certain point, what more can you get out of it? I have a ton but only because I loved it and the doctor I was shadowing kept asking me to come back. She really loves to teach....
