So I attend a large research university, and our hospital does not offer formal shadowing. You have to reach out yourself and arrange it. I emailed about 5 DOs in hopes I could find 1 willing to let me tag along. Well turns out I have had 2 anesthesiologists write me back within a day apart saying they will let me shadow. Would it look bad, or even be appropriate to shadow 2 different DO's, same specialty, within the same time frame?

EDIT: I don't see where it would be my place to write a DO back, that is willing to let me shadow, and say "as it turns out, I have someone else, but thanks."

See the problem?

It would be fine to shadow both.

Since they work in the same department, I'm sure they probably know each other. Should I let them know I am shadowing the other as a courtesy?

That probably doesn't matter. You could casually mention that you contacted a few doctors and you were lucky enough to get the opportunity to shadow two doctors.

Most DO schools require a letter from a DO. The DOs know this and seem to be very willing to allow students to shadow. I think they could care less how many other DOs you shadow or wether or not they know the other DO.

Just ask one to reschedule.

No, it's not at the same time. But I don't want to be put in the awkward situation where I'm shadowing the first time, then by chance meet the other one at the same time. I just don't like those awkward situations lol

It's not at the exact same time, so what's the problem?

What's the problem with rescheduling?

No problem. I was just curious if you thought it would be a problem to not reschedule if its not the exact same time.

I just think it would be awkward to run into one while you're shadowing the other. I personally would like to avoid hat situation. Otherwise, no I don't think it's a problem at all.

I could see how that might seem awkward. I think that the doctors would not really think it was awkward, nor would they care, but you could mention it up front if you were worried about that.

The only way I could see it as a problem is if one of the doctors had major insecurity issues to the point that they felt rejected by a pre-med student shadowing other doctors. Doesn't that sound pretty silly when you think about it like that?

hahaha. if one doctor sees you shadowing another doctor, his feelings will probably be hurt and he may cry, so you should definitely avoid that situation.

they aren't going to care.

I would feel silly if a gas saw me shadowing his gas colleague. Same for any specialty. I'd feel dumb for shadowing the same specialty twice if I got caught doing it.

You're taking a huge risk here. Make sure you change their contact names on your phone to names of your friends to lower the chances of getting caught, so if one of the docs sees the incriminating texts you can play it off. And be sure to have your boys ready with an alibi just in case one of the docs contacts them. In the off-chance you run into one of them while shadowing the other, just say that you were actually volunteering and ran into the doc for a moment. Good luck!!!!

Well, Medicine sure has gotten competitive. Now, not only are we supposed to shadow a physician--now we have to shadow two!

What's the deal with all these DO anesthesiologists? I was looking for a DO to shadow and there were more anesthesiologists than family meds

My cousin shadowed both an MD cardiologist and a DO cardiologist. They were chill. But two DOs...? hmm...😕

It is well known that Anesthesia (gas) is DO-friendly and as part of the ROAD specialties, you may find an increase in D.O.s in that field.

I highly doubt they care or will think it's awkward. I've shadowed so many different doctors at my local hospital in the last four years that one morning when I came in one of the FPs turned to his colleagues and asked who had me for the day, and then asked if I was looking for him. If I wasn't on my way into the OR, I would have said yes because he was about to start morning rounds. Trust me, the more doctors who know you, the better.

Thanks for the assurance. I did let the 2nd one know though, just as a courtesy.

For some reason, my brain keeps thinking about Office Space when I read this thread.

Except replace shadow with "do" and physicians with "chicks"
