Hey guys,

A Dentist that works at the Dental school(oversees student work) that I want to go has kindly offered to let me shadow her. It seems like it will be a great thing to do, especially if she see's fit to write me a good letter of recommendation at the end it of it all.

The problem is that her dental office is 20 miles away from me.

I have another Dentist that graduated from that school who lives 5 minutes from me.

How valuable do you think shadowing the faculty Dentist is?

I could shadow the faculty for like 20 hours and then move on to the other Dentist. What do you guys think?

I would definitely shadow the faculty dentist! Her recommendation could be a great plus towards getting you into dental school. Twenty miles isn't that bad--it's worth it!

As long as that faculty dentist is respected at the school then this could be one of the best things you do. Having someone on the inside can be a huge advantage to you.

I shadowed a dentist once who flat out said that his LOR could get me into a particular dental school since he used to be an Adcom. Although I didn't take him up on that in the long run, I'm fairly certain he was being serious.

Don't pass up the great opportunity, I commute ~25 miles to school everyday, so for such a great setup 20 is nothing if you've got a car.

Wow, I don't know if she is on the Admission committee but I know that she is highly respected at the school.

Do it, I'm sure you won't regret it 😉! I wish I had that opportunity for my top choice *sigh*

do it, this isn't even a question. at worst you get a good lor, at best it outright gets you in when you otherwise wouldn't have been.

Shadowing a particular dentist probably won't help you get in. At least, don't count on it. What matters most is what you learn from him. Since he's faculty, he's probably knowledgeable on what to teach you.
