Hello I was wondering if there are any Osteopathic Physicians in Metro Detroit that I can shadow. I have been contacting the two nearby hospitals and even MSU COM, but none of the physicians that I have reached are willing allow shadowing for any undergraduate students.

to be honest, around here, the hospitals are more open to shadowing. The DOs I have managed to get in touch with in clinics have all rejected my shadowing requests even though I have received their information through the MSU COM dean.

well I can tell you that when I was looking for a doctor to shadow the first time, I called and emailed around 20 people and only 1 responded. So it isn't an easy task in the first place.

Metro Detroit is probably one of the easiest places to find a DO. There are even osteopathic hospitals in the area, too. Look them up: Botsford Hospital, Garden City Hospital. Plenty of DOs in the Henry Ford system, and you will find them in pretty much any hospital in this area. Look up the hospital websites.

I found many DOs willing to let me shadow in the Metro Detroit area, both in clinics and in hospitals. I hand wrote letters to physicians asking if they were willing to let me follow them around. Out of the 15 or so physicians I contacted, about 10 of them replied fairly quickly and were willing to let me come hang around for a while.

I wrote out letters for the simple reason that I felt it was more professional than a quick email and less hassle then trying to call in. Also, if the docs wanted me to come in, they (or their secretaries in most cases) could let me know, or they could simply toss the letter aside.

If you are really having hard time finding DOs, let me know and I can pass along a few of the names of physicians who are really receptive to pre-meds 🙂

Look at all the Metro love 🙂 I never had a problem, I'm surprised you are. I'm up here near Flint however. Good luck and good to "see" another "local"

Thanks guys. The physicians that I asked are involved in private practices and all of them were unwilling to allow me to shadow. I got a hold of the dean at MSU COM in Detroit and he gave me a list of numbers, but every single one of them were either unresponsive, did not return my calls meet with them, or just said no outright.

I will attempt to get in touch with Henry Ford, but Botsford said I need to have already known a DO and Garden City's student education coordinator has not responded to me yet.

Really, wow... Im surprised that everyone is making everything so difficult...

It seems that the majority of osteopathic physicians are a bit north or west of the metro detroit area. There is a high density of them here, but I might just be unlucky. I hope that there are a few helpful mentors that are willing to allow me to shadow them before the application process begins this summer.

Also, I have a question about the aacomas app... I filled it out very early and just realized that it is closed and will be reset for the upcoming cycle. Do you know when my app can be accessed because at the moment it is completely closed and I can not edit anything on there.

Garden City Hospital was actually very quick to respond when I emailed the coordinator. I guess phone calls are not the way to go these days. Thanks for the responses, everyone.

OMS3 here downriver...check out the hospitals and clinics down/ HF-Wyandotte, Southshore, etc...

Thanks, I managed to get a physician at GCH so I hope that I am set.

call up betsy davis at POH and ask her for an observership application... should go very smoothly

You could also try St Marys in Livonia. Lots of DOs there, especially in the ED and I know they let people shadow
