Hey everyone! This is my first post and I am excited to join this wonderful group of people here at SDN. What I wanted to ask is what is the best place to begin looking for a DO to shadow? Any other tips besides cold calling would be appreciated. I am in the San Diego area and want to start to gain some experience to put under my belt. I have always wanted to become a DO, and I know this is the place to start.

For the record I'm in my undergrad years right now so I still have a little while to go, but might as well start preparing early!

Thanks in advance,

Eddy

There is a neat tool under this website that lets you see DOs closest to you, I haven't really had to use it but I could see it coming in handy. You can also sort by specialty, which is nice.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply! This site looks really promising. Would you suggest mailing a resume to each office or calling them up and asking if they are willing to take on a new student?

My Nephrologist friend who is an MD is connecting me to a DO, but yes cold calling works. DOs seem to be more receptive, particularly with private practices, in my experience.

I always suggest walking into a few practices/clinics and trying to get in contact so they can at least put a face to a name. You would just explain your reasons why you would like to shadow, and typically the people upfront will put you in contact with the physician if they’re available to have someone follow them. I found this method to be easier than cold-calling personally, but everyone goes about it differently.

Is having 13 DOs in your region too much or average? Because some have said no and I am running out of options :arghh::scared:

There isn't a whole lot where I live either, I think it's just a matter of persistence. Hopefully, others with more experience can chime in as well. Best of luck!
